1984 by George Orwell

So it took me what seemed like a really long time to finish this book. For some reason I just couldn't get into it. But its one of those books that 'everyone should read', right? Plus I figure I should know what people are really talking about when they refer to Big Brother. So I trudged on. And then somewhere around page 50 I got hooked and couldn't put it down. There are so many unsettling things in this book. Like rewriting history to make whatever truth you want real. Government monitoring and controlling everything you do down to your thoughts. And worst of all creating a class of people who are unable to think freely. I think what bothers me most is that much of this is not or may not be far off. While most were required to read 1984 in high school (yeah, thanks MCHS for an outstanding English curriculum) I never did. (Along with The Great Gatsby and probably a ton of other works of 'great contemporary literature'.) It was a provocative read and I'm glad I finally did.
