It's taking me forever (damn you TV!) but I'm making my way through A Hearbreaking Work of Staggering Genius by Dave Eggars. In two words the book is hilarious and painful. And yes, it is heartbreaking. Yet in a bitter sweet way. It's hilarious because Eggars is a brilliantly funny writer. He writes how I think my friend Brian would write. I don't know what the right word is - but think of word that means self-deprecating, egotistical, sick, sarcastic and deeply honest and insert it here. Therein comes the pain. Because he's so honest its painful. His story, which is somewhat fact and somewhat fiction is so sad. Yet he finds a way to rise above it and carry on. I just love his sense of humor. Read the forward, cleverly titled "Rules and Suggestions for Enjoyment of This Book" and if you like it then buy it (or get it from your library) and read on. If you can't make it through the forward then you might find the rest of the book hard to read. A lot stream-of-conscious, random thoughts strung together with the story of losing his parents and becoming a single-mom of sorts to his younger brother. You'll laugh out loud and might even cry.
